There will be some friendly competition at the Sarnia YMCA Jerry McCaw Family Centre as teams race to push a school bus across the finish line, with the ultimate goal of sending kids to camp.
The fourth annual Push the Bus tournament will be held at the Finch Drive location on Friday, July 11 from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m.
This year's goal was to raise $30,000 to send 150 local kids to summer camp.
General Manager Paul Skuza said the opportunity to go to camp allows children to stay active and entertained during the summer months, but it also gives them the chance to create lasting friendships and memories.
"Our camp leaders, they do an incredible job of making sure kids get physical activity but also develop social skills," Skuza said. "They're doing team building, leadership activities, they're doing sports, arts and crafts, there's swimming in the pool, they're out exploring."
Skuza said the fun event has grown in popularity.
"We had teams dress up in costumes last year. We had the best team spirit award, highest fundraising team award," he said. "It's kind of evolved over the years and become a bit more competitive. Now we have two buses racing side by side. We have teams of three to six people behind the bus, pushing it -- not too far, about 80 metres."
The winning teams advance through the bracket until one is named champion.
The Sarnia Professional Firefighters Association has won the coveted Golden Bus trophy two years in a row.
Last year, almost 30 teams participated in the tournament and over $21,000 was raised.
The Push the Bus competition is part of the Fill The Bus campaign. The YMCA of Southwestern Ontario's Push the Bus tour kicked off in Chatham on July 6, where they raised $20,000 to send 100 kids to camp.
