Caliper trees arrive for Sarnia spring planting

Wednesday is Earth Day.

Sarnia's forestry crews are preparing to head out to parks and boulevards to plant 182 trees in the weeks ahead.

The caliper trees recently arrived as part of the spring planting program.

City of Sarnia officials said 137 trees will be planted on city-owned boulevards, ensuring every neighbourhood can reap all the economic, health and environmental benefits tree-lined streets provide.

Boulevard trees are required in every new subdivision agreement (one per lot), and the city works with developers to plant them after construction wraps up to ensure they aren’t damaged.

The city said it's part of efforts to grow the urban canopy.

"Our council-endorsed Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP) sets a bold goal to increase the urban canopy to 23 per cent by 2050," it said. "That goal starts with ensuring city-owned boulevards and parks across the community are well treed to benefit homeowners now and into the future."

The trees were chosen based on neighbourhood environmental conditions, diversity and canopy goals to ensure they thrive.

Trees planted on the city-owned boulevard at the front of lots are maintained by forestry staff.

Further information is posted to the City of Sarnia's website.
