Memory Care Kits now available at Lambton libraries

Lambton County Library is offering something new to help boost the cognitive health of its patrons.

Public Services Coordinator for Collections Kevin Coates said they're offering Memory Care Kits that include different activities.

"Things like puzzles and other things to help people going through either dementia or starting to lose their memory," he said. "We put together these kits that will include some items to help them improve their memory."

Coates said the kits are designed to encourage meaningful engagement, cognitive stimulation and social connection through books, games and puzzles.

"Reminiscing about things that might have happened in the past and other things that help them to improve their motor skills," Coates said.

The collection includes six kits, each featuring activities designed to support individuals in early, mid, and late stages of decline.

"The Alzheimer Society of Sarnia-Lambton provided guidance on the types of materials to include in the kits to promote reminiscing, manipulating, organizing, and sorting," he said.

Coates decided to develop the kits after noticing other libraries offering something similar.

"I'm always on the lookout to see what other libraries are doing and this looked like one that would help out people in our community," he said.

You can reserve a kit for 21 days at lclibrary.ca, using the Iguana app, or by visiting or calling a Lambton County Library location.
