Petrolia and Enniskillen Fall Fair returns to its agriculture roots

The Petrolia and Enniskillen Fall Fair once again kicks off the fall fair season this weekend.

This year's theme is "Roots and Dreams: What Farming Means".

Petrolia and Enniskillen Agricultural Society President Demi Krall said this year the fair is more agricultural based.

"We're trying to bring back farm education because that's mainly what [fairs] are supposed to be about and where they started," she said.

Krall said generational farming is becoming more rare.

"I find people don't really know where their food comes from and I feel that's important to know, so if we can even open their eyes a little bit to the work that goes into making all of the food, growing crops and taking care of livestock " she said.

The opening ceremonies kick off at 6 p.m. on Friday but inflatables, the petting zoo and other kids activities start at 4 p.m.

Krall said for the second year in a row there will be ATV races.

"Last year we just did barrel races but this year we will be doing ATV drag races as well," she said. "We're pretty excited for that, that will be on the Saturday."

On Sunday, there will be the demolition and lawn mower derby's.

The annual parade is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday and Krall said there will also be several exhibitions.

"People will enter in quilts that they've made or to show off their crops or their bake goods or canning, artwork, photos," she said. "We have many different categories and classes."

She added exhibition numbers have been low over the past couple of years but she's hopeful they will be back up.

Krall said it's exciting to be able to kick off the fall fair season in Lambton County.

"We love being able to kick off the fall fairs. We have a lot of fun doing it and it's fun to see the community out and having fun, so we're excited for it," she said.

The full schedule and details regarding admission can be found on the Petrolia and Enniskillen Fall Fair website or Facebook page.
