Library marking Black History Month with traditional songs, poetry

Bruce County residents will be able to celebrate Black History Month with an afternoon of African American spirituals at the Bruce County Public Library.

The event will be held at the Kincardine Branch at 2 p.m. on February 22.

African American spirituals are a deeply emotional musical tradition rooted in the resilience and faith of Black people enslaved in the American South during the 18th and 19th centuries. They will be presented by Jenny Hunter, along with special guests Jason Hunter, Yuki Okumoto Stocovaz, and Sarah Dunstan and blended with poetry. To add another layer of cultural richness to the afternoon, Coral’s Caribbean Cuisine will be on site offering tastings of their Caribbean-inspired dishes, including daal and chicken curry with rice and peas.

“At Bruce County Public Library, we are proud to create spaces where every member of our community can learn and celebrate diverse cultural histories," said Library Director Brooke McLean. "This event brings together music, storytelling, and cuisine that reflect the vibrancy of Black communities past and present."

While the event is free to attend and open to all ages, registration is required. Spots can be reserved through the library website library.brucecounty.on.ca.
