Sarnia police nab porch pirate

Sarnia Police Service is highlighting the quick work of an officer which helped catch a "porch pirate" on Valentine's Day.

According to police, on February around 3 p.m., a Crawford Street home's video security recorded a suspect stealing a package off the porch. Police were called immediately and arrived to investigate minutes later.

The video showed a woman walk up to the house and steal a package with roughly $45 of items inside. She went southbound on Crawford Street, then turned right to go westbound on Talford Street.

An officer searched the area and located a suspect matching the description at Margaret Street and Richard Street. She was placed under arrest. A search allegedly revealed the stolen items.

The 37-year-old of no fixed address, was charged with theft under $5000 and released on a police undertaking.

"While our officers are often called to high-priority events, we also respond quickly to less serious offences when we can," said Chief Derek Davis in a media release. "Theft and property crimes affect the quality of life in our neighbourhoods, and we will continue to hold those offenders accountable. I commend the officer for their speedy and effective response to this call."

The stolen property was returned to the victim.
