The Kidney Foundation hopes Chatham-Kent residents strap on their sneakers on Sunday, September 20 and head to Mud Creek Trail.
That's where the 2026 Kidney Walk will take place.
"The event is designed to bring the community together in support of those affected by kidney disease," said Shannon Van Watteghem-Levasseur, Fund and Community Development Officer with the Kidney Foundation's Windsor and District Chapter.
She added that the walk welcomes participants of all ages and abilities, with both a long and short route available to allow for better accessibility and participation.
According to Van Watteghem-Levasseur, this year's fundraising goal is $11,750.
"Funds raised support kidney research, patient education, peer support, advocacy initiatives, and short-term financial assistance for individuals and families affected by kidney disease," she shared. "They also help provide educational resources, camp subsidies for children, and other programs that improve quality of life for kidney patients across the country."
While fundraising is an important component of the event, Van Watteghem-Levasseur explained that it's not the most important thing.
"The walk also serves as a valuable opportunity to bring together patients, families, healthcare professionals, and community members in support of kidney health," she said.
The Kidney Walk was held annually in Chatham from 2012 until 2018, when the event was discontinued due to declining attendance. It was reintroduced in the community in 2024, and participation has increased since then.
The walk will take place rain-or-shine, with the exception of severe weather or other safety concerns. In that case, event organizers will communicate any necessary adjustments to registered participants.
Registration for the walk starts at noon. The walk itself is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
