Essex council to debate flooding task force

Essex Town Council is expected to debate a motion at Monday night's meeting to approve the formation of a task force on flooding.

The motion, introduced by Mayor Sherry Bondy, will ask the administration to establish a task force to examine the causes of flooding in the municipality and propose solutions.

Bondy previously told WindsorNewsToday.ca that the task force would create a plan of action and estimate the costs.

"We could potentially go to the province and say, you know, we have a backlog of drainage works, $60-million dollars worth, you know, we can't afford it. Is there any assistance?" said Bondy. "It'll give us a plan with costs associated with it, so we can see what we're looking at financially."

The mayor added that there was a task force over a decade ago, when Ward 1 residents dealt with back-to-back sanitary sewer backups.

The task force would also consult with experts and environmentalists, identify flood mitigation options, and report their findings to Town Council.

Calls for action had gotten louder after the municipality was soaked by 108 millimetres of rainfall in three hours' time on September 24, 2025.
