INEOS announces completed closure

INEOS Styrolution has officially closed its Sarnia site after decommissioning the Tashmoo Avenue facility.

The update was issued Wednesday afternoon through the Sarnia-Lambton Alerts notification system.

The company had previously announced the plant's decommissioning work in June, about a year after announcing plans to close the Sarnia site.

The styrene monomer production site had shut down after orders were placed on the facility in response to members of Aamjiwnaang First Nation feeling ill due to elevated levels of benzene emissions.

Since announcing the closure, INEOS said it has worked diligently to ensure that all activities were completed safely and responsibly. "The health and safety of our employees, our neighbours, and the environment have remained our highest priorities throughout this process," read the notification. "We extend our sincere gratitude to the Sarnia community for its patience, understanding, and support during this transition."

INEOS noted its long history in the community, spanning eight decades, since 1943.

"While the closure of the Sarnia site marks the end of an important chapter, INEOS Styrolution remains deeply appreciative of the men and women who built and sustained this operation over the decades," read the notification.

Sarnia News Today reached out to INEOS Styrolution for further comment but did not receive a reply by the time of publication.
