Residents reminded to be firework safe this weekend

It's the Victoria Day long weekend, which is the unofficial start to summer, and that means there will be loud bright lights in the sky.

Sarnia Fire Rescue is reminding residents to be safe if they plan on setting off fireworks this weekend.

The City of Sarnia bylaw allows for fireworks to be discharged on Victoria Day, Canada Day, a special occasion day, and one day before and after each holiday.

"If you are going to do your own fireworks it has to be on your own private property, never on public land," Public Education Officer Mike Otis said.

He said it is important to keep safety in mind.

"There's lots of risk with fireworks. You take all of he liability of anything that happens in terms of property damage or injury," Otis said.

He explained even sparklers burn at 1,200 degrees.

Otis said there can be an uptick in calls.

"While I don't know the exact pattern holidays tend to be busy," he said.

If there are any infractions to the bylaw you may be subject to a fine.
