A 50-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder following a shooting in Hanover earlier this week.
Hanover Police say Joel Stephenson, of no fixed address, was arrested shortly after the shooting on Tuesday and has now been charged with attempted murder using a firearm and two counts of possessing a firearm contrary to a prohibition order.
Stephenson was remanded into custody following a bail hearing Wednesday and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Walkerton on Thursday.
Police were called to a residence in the 300 block of 14th Avenue shortly before noon Tuesday after a 37-year-old man was shot.
Investigators say the victim and accused knew each other and were involved in a dispute immediately before the shooting.
The victim remains in hospital in stable condition while recovering from his injuries.
Police have also located a black van that was seen leaving the area following the shooting after asking for the public's help identifying it.
“All occupants of the van have been accounted for and are cooperating with investigators,” police said in an update Wednesday.
Police say several identified witnesses have yet to speak with investigators and are being encouraged to come forward.
In the statement, Hanover Police Chief Christopher Knoll says the service wants to reassure the community that “violence will not be tolerated and people who engage in such behaviour will be held accountable for their actions.”
Police say the investigation “remains active and ongoing” and further charges are pending.
The charges against Stephenson have not been proven in court.
