11th annual 'Socktober' donation event underway

Donations of new, unopened socks are still being collected as part of the 11th annual Socktober initiative, held in support of The Inn of the Good Shepherd.

Inn Fundraising Coordinator Melissa Roushorne said the team at George O'Mahony Orthotics spearheaded the donation drive.

"Last year, they got around 5,500 socks," Roushorne said. "This sort of donation lasts us through the year, to be able to give out socks to our clients."

While children's socks are appreciated, Roushorne said there's more of a need for adult socks.

"Those are the people who are walking everyday, [their socks are] getting wet and needing replacements," she said. "We all know that dry feet are important and sometimes you can't always get new shoes, so this is an easy way to sort of help people who are in need."

Donated socks will be available at the Inn's reception desk at 115 John St. and at the shelter.

Roushorne said the efforts by O'Mahony and his team and the number of donations received is a testament to how giving the community is.

"If other companies or businesses are interested in doing something like an underwear drive or socktober drive in a different month, or join [O'Mahony] on his socktober initiative, we're always open to that sort of thing," Roushorne said. "Socks and underwear and that sort of thing are never something we ask for, a lot of the time, it's food, so it's nice when businesses are creative and think of ways to help their neighbours."

Sock donations can be dropped off at George O'Mahony Orthotics at 714 London Rd. in Sarnia until October 31.
