Georgian Bluffs residents can learn more about new cart-based waste collection

Georgian Bluffs residents will say goodbye to their old garbage and recycling bins and hello to a new cart-based automated waste collection system this summer.

The changes are expected to increase township efficiency by replacing manual collection and eliminating bag tags.

Residents will receive three new carts: one for garbage, one for recycling, and one for organics. These carts will allow new, modern automated collection trucks to remove waste from properties. The new carts will be delivered to homes between June 8 and 27 with the new system slated to launch on July 6. As of that date, garbage and recycling collection will move to every other week, weekly organic collection will begin, and collection days will change for some residents.

Ahead of the switch, the township will hold two drop-in public information sessions at Shallow Lake Arena. The first will be held this Thursday, while the second is scheduled for May 27. Both sessions will run from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. and will give residents a chance to see the new carts and ask questions about the changes to waste collection.

Manual collection will continue for a small number of properties on private and cottage roads because of physical constraints. Those residents will be contacted by mail, the township said.
