WDCS students to mark V-E Day in Europe

A group of 40 students from Walkerton District Community School will take part in a V-E Day ceremony as part of a trip to Europe.

The trip takes place from May 1 to May 9.

Teacher Nathan Troyer said they'll be marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands by Canadian soldiers in the Second World War on May 4 and 5 in Bergen-op-zoom.

"There's a Canadian War Cemetery there, so part of the ceremony will start at the cemetery, and then there's a silent march into the downtown of their gun op zoom, where we'll there's a second ceremony that will take place there," explained Troyer.

Troyer revealed that several students will be able to take part in the services.

"One student is going to be a co-emcee. There are some students that are going to carry one of the Canadian flags that fly over the Peace Tower in Ottawa and and we'll donate that to the town," explained Troyer. "The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has created a new torch that will be passed on in a torch relay."

While in Europe, the students will also get a chance to visit other sites.

"The main reason why we're going is to help celebrate that anniversary," Troyer continued. "And then after that proportion of the trip is done. We're heading towards the Passchendaele area and Vimy, which are locations from the First World War."

Troyer said this will be an exciting experience for many of the participants, as they see firsthand some of the places they discuss in history class.

"I hope they get an appreciation for our Canadian history and what our veterans accomplished for us and how that helped build Canada into what it is today," he concluded.

Troyer said community support helped make the trip possible, including funding from the Walkerton Kinettes, as well as the Walkerton Legion and the Chesley Legion.
