Community votes help win funds for Petrolia splash pad

The Kiwanis Club of Petrolia and Area has received a big boost to help pay for its new splash pad at the YMCA.

The club was named the runner up in the Growing Home with BASF contest and will receive $10,000 for the project.

Voting wrapped up on April 15 and the winners were announced on Tuesday, April 29.

Fundraising board member Melissa Duquette said it was a close race.

"We were in first place as of midnight Tuesday (April 15) Eastern Standard Time, but the contest went to midnight Mountain Standard Time and we were not in the lead at 12:30," Duquette said. "So, we would have had to have won at 2 a.m. our time, but as of 12:30 a.m. we were not in the lead, so we really don't know how many votes we were off by, but we know it was very, very close."

The top prize of $25,000 was given to the Palmerston and District Hospital Foundation, near Listowel, for its MRI campaign.

"There were no losers in this contest. We knew going against Palmerston that they definitely need every dime they can get as well, because they are paying for an MRI machine," she said.

While an official opening date for the splash pad has yet to be announced, construction was expected to be completed by June

"We are just so happy to have $10,000 for our little community of Petrolia and so proud of everybody that took part helping us get there," Duquette said.

The total project costs $150,000 and with this contribution about 27 per cent of the fundraising goal has been reached.

"We're just really excited that this gives us a pretty good jump on our fundraising for the year," she said.
