CKHAF 50/50 winner takes home over $50K

The winner of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Foundation's (CKHAF) Spring 50/50 is a long-time supporter of the fundraiser.

"I've supported the hospital 50/50s for years, but I never thought that would happen," said winner George Kernohan.

The man from Morpeth said he was surprised when the CKHAF team tracked him down at work to present him with his $50,860 cheque.

Kernohan bought the winning ticket on Tuesday, just two days before the contest closed and his ticket was drawn.

"Now I can buy some more tickets and keep supporting our hospital," he stated. Adding that he plans to share some of his winnings with his family, take a trip, and maybe even buy a new motorcycle.

There were six other winners, with early bird winners being selected once a week throughout the campaign.

The second annual Spring 50/50 raised a total of $101,720.

"The success of our Spring 50/50 has once again shown how deeply this community cares about its local hospital, and for one another," said Christine Mitchell, CKHAF President and CEO. "Every ticket purchased helps us make a real difference in the lives of patients, and we're so happy to celebrate this life-changing win with George and his whole family."

The second half of the funds raised will go toward the Highest Priority Needs fund at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA), which pays for vital medical equipment and infrastructure upgrades at both the Chatham and Wallaceburg hospital sites.

CKHAF will launch its Summer 50/50 draw in August.
