Windsor-Detroit Tunnel marks 96 years on Tuesday

One of Windsor's international border crossings will mark its anniversary on Tuesday.

The Windsor-Detroit Tunnel will turn 96, and commuters are invited to celebrate.

The tunnel will offer complimentary gifts to travellers on Tuesday, while supplies last.

Windsor-Detroit Borderlink Limited CEO Tal Czudner said that the tunnel remains a symbol of the strong relationship between the two cities.

"Few infrastructure projects can claim to have connected two nations and two communities as closely as the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel has over the past 96 years," said Czudner. "The Tunnel is more than a transportation link. It is part of the identity of Windsor and Detroit, helping bring people together for work, tourism, championship sports teams, entertainment, education, and family."

The tunnel opened on November 3, 1930, after two years of construction. It was the first underwater vehicular crossing in the world between two countries.

The crossing is the busiest for passenger vehicles between Canada and the U.S.
