Windsor police say speeding is the key issue at intersection near mall

The ongoing investigation into Windsor's most dangerous intersections has uncovered a startling statistic.

Windsor police reported last week that the intersection of Howard Avenue and the E.C. Row Expressway, near Devonshire Mall, was the most dangerous in the city over the first eight months of 2024.

Now, police say that the vast majority of those who use the intersection are speeders.

"From June 26 to August 19, 141,590 out of 181,647 vehicles taking the off-ramp from E.C. Row Expressway onto Howard Ave. exceeded the designated speed limit," read a tweet from Windsor police. "That’s 78 per cent of all motorists."

Police previously indicated that 38 vehicle crashes had occurred at the intersection since January.

Members of the Traffic Enforcement Unit began monitoring traffic at the city's ten most dangerous intersections in May. Officers have been looking for impaired driving, aggressive driving, and distracted driving.

Police have provided some tips for staying safe, including the following.

  • Stay alert, as the majority of crashes occur at intersections.

  • Obey all traffic signals and signage.

  • Maintain a safe following distance. Don't tailgate.

  • Be prepared for the possibility of sudden stops.

  • Put the cell phone away, even at a red light.
