Work is getting started on a new nursing home in Sarnia.
City hall issued a $60 million permit last month for construction of a five-storey long-term care facility at the site of Sumac Lodge on Blackwell Road.
Plans for a new home have been in the works for several years.
In January, developer Revera Inc., cancelled plans to build a state-of-the-art long-term care home at 1597 London Line and the land was declared as surplus, forcing Sumac Lodge to go back to its original application to redevelop on their present site.
Lawrence Architects said the new 190,000 square foot facility at 1464 Blackwell Road will have 256 beds once completed, more than doubling the existing 90 beds currently available.
A total of 30 permits were issued at Sarnia City Hall in October, with a total construction value of just over $66.2 million.
The monthly stats also include a $2.2 million permit for a 25,000 square foot building shell at 272 McGregor Side Road.
Permits for three single family homes were also issued last month, bringing the year-to-date total to 33.
That's up from 21 compared to the same timeframe last year.
