Midterm vote in the U.S. will determine country's future

The direction of the United States for the next two years will be decided by voters on Tuesday.

Election Day marks the midterm elections, as voters will choose members of the U.S. House of Representatives and a portion of the U.S. Senate.

Some states, including Michigan, will choose governors and state legislators, along with multiple state and local referendums.

The outcome will determine which party controls one or both chambers of Congress, affecting the Trump administration’s ability to enact an agenda.

All 435 U.S. House seats are up for grabs, as members are elected to two-year terms. As of Monday night, Republicans held 218 seats and Democrats 214. There was one independent member and two vacant seats.

In the Senate, Republicans held 49 seats as of Monday night, with 47 Democrats and four independents. However, only 35 Senate seats are being contested.

One of those seats is from Michigan, an open seat as Democratic incumbent Gary Peters is retiring. Former Congressman Mike Rogers is the Republican nominee, while Abdul El-Sayed, the former director of the Wayne County Department of Health, is the Democratic nominee.

Michigan voters will also select a new governor and lieutenant governor. Two-term incumbent Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, can't run again because of term limits. Running to succeed her is Republican Congressman John James and his running mate, State Representative Jay DeBoyer. The Democratic nominee is incumbent Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, with State Senator Winnie Brinks as her running mate.

Running to succeed Benson are the Democratic incumbent Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist and Republican Anthony Forlini, the current Macomb County Clerk. The Secretary of State is responsible for overseeing Michigan elections, as well as driver’s licences and registrations.

The race for attorney general is also open as Democratic incumbent Dana Nessel is term-limited. The Democratic nominee is Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit, while the Republican candidate is Doug Lloyd, who holds the same position in Eaton County.

Polls will close in Michigan at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
