The fourth annual Corunna Street Festival kicks off this weekend.
Chairperson Tracy Kingston said the event was originally planned to commemorate Corunna almost becoming the capital of Canada.
"It started back in 2023 when the Heritage Committee of St. Clair Township wanted to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Corunna being a possible capital city of Canada. So we played that up and wanted to do events throughout the year. So that was one of them, and then we continued it since then," she said.
This year's event has dozens of vendors and several specialized events for the whole family, including bouncy castles, live entertainment and various activities.
"We've got a good mix of crafters, artisans, and local businesses, and then throughout the day we've got entertainment. It starts off with Zumba in the morning, so Brian Slaughter and his crew come, gets everybody wound up for the day, lots of fun music, and then we've got a toddler zone," said Kingston. "We've got a sandbox on the street, which is kind of fun. We've got some inflatables, including giant Popeye. We've got face painting, a stilt walker and mermaid. Bennett's Auto is sponsoring the kids' cub car race, so he's got little wooden cars that the kids paint. They can pick kits up ahead of time or at the festival, and he's going to have a race."
Several local businesses and groups are involved in the event. The Knights of Columbus are hosting a breakfast at the St. Joseph's Parish Hall, the Corunna United Church is hosting a yard sale, Bear Creek Stables are bringing their team of mules for wagon rides, and the Kiwanis Club of Corunna St. Clair is hosting a barbecue.
"People are very excited for it because the moms can wander through the vendors while the kids play on the inflatables, or grandparents can. We sometimes find three generations of families that come," said Kingston.
The free festival is organized by the Optimist Club of Moore with support from St. Clair Township and several sponsors.
It runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 19.
Part of Lyndoch Street between Fane and Cameron Streets will be closed to traffic from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.
