All invited to 5th annual Slow Roll

The fifth annual Bluewater International Granfondo Slow Roll will feature a new scenic route with live music throughout the 10 kilometre ride.

The all-ages cycling event will be held on Sunday, June 14.

Bluewater Cycling Organization Operations Manager Kendel Ross said the goal is to have at least 500 participants.

"It's just meant to showcase our beautiful area," Ross said. "We've seen riders of ages four to 97 in the event. Our trishaws are out in that event, which are electrically-assisted bikes so people can sit in the front. We've really seen all abilities, all bike-types, all ages in that event."

The Slow Roll will begin at the Royal Canadian Legion on Front Street in Sarnia. The route will go underneath the Blue Water Bridge via Venetian Boulevard, through Canatara Park, and back to the Legion.

The event is free but participants are asked to donate to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sarnia-Lambton.

"This year, donations are being matched by some very gracious supporters of the event," she said.

Ross said the Slow Roll started as a way of building on the organization's mission statement of creating a more active, healthy, and connected community.

"Our slow roll is allowing us to expand out to different abilities, shortening the ride, keeping it slow, and allowing people to just get out and enjoy the bicycle," she said.

The ride will be escorted by Sarnia police and OPP.

Check-in is at 1:30 p.m. and the ride will begin at 2 p.m.

A post-ride celebration will be held at the Legion, where drinks and $1 hot dogs will be available.

This year, participants are encouraged to wear red.

Registration can be done online through the cycling organization's website.
