Gladu withdraws request, wants to keep Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong name

The Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong riding name will remain unchanged.

MP Marilyn Gladu had initially asked for the name to change back to Sarnia-Lambton as part of an amendment to change the name of certain electoral districts.

However, in a letter recently sent to the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs, Gladu asked for her amendment to be deleted.

She said she was previously under the impression that Walpole Island First Nation did not want "Bkejwanong" included in the riding name, but later heard otherwise from Chief Leela Thomas.

"Once the riding name actually did come through and get changed to include Bkejwanong, they really liked it, and they wanted to keep that in there," Gladu said. "I was not aware because the previous chief had wanted it taken out. So I was happy to put the necessary procedures forward to the committee that's looking at Bill C-25 so that we will remain Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong."

Gladu said she also had conversations with the chiefs of Aamjiwnaang First Nation and Kettle and Stony Point First Nation.

The request to keep the riding name unchanged received an immediate response from the procedure's team on Tuesday, Gladu said.

"They've put me in touch with a legislative clerk ... there's an amendment that will basically say, 'delete this line,'" she said.

The new electoral district of Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong officially appeared in the 2025 Federal Election, although the federal redistribution work began in 2022.
