Sarnia Fire Rescue is reminding residents to be aware of bylaws if they plan to set off fireworks over the Victoria Day long weekend.
There are restrictions on when you can buy fireworks and when you can set them off.
"They have to be set off on permitted use days, that being Victoria Day or Canada Day, the day before, or the day after. They can only be sold one week leading up to those events. But we highly encourage people to go to the public displays just for the safety of everybody, " said Public Education Officer with Sarnia Fire Rescue Services Mike Otis.
Everyone is encouraged to view the displays put on by the City of Sarnia, but if you are going to set off on your own has to happen on private property.
"Anything you set off on your own, you're going to be subject to any liability for any fires or any damages you might cause, injuries, etc. So it's always the best bet to leave it to the professionals and go to the public firework displays," said Otis. "If you set any fireworks off and say it lands on a neighbour's house or anything, you're going to be liable for that and any injuries that you might cause. You cannot set up fireworks from public property."
All private firework displays cannot be set off on public property, can only happen on declared special occasion days, and must happen between dusk and 11 p.m. on those days.
More details can be found on the city's bylaw website.
