Federal government suspending fuel excise tax

Canadians will pay less tax at the pumps this summer.

Starting on April 20, the federal government will suspend the fuel excise tax until September 7.

The move was announced the day after Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberals swept three by-elections to give the party a slim majority.

"Cutting the tax on gasoline and diesel until Labour Day is a responsible measure that will reduce operating costs for truckers and businesses in the food, agriculture, housing, construction, and delivery sectors," Carney said in a statement from the Prime Minister's Office.

As a result of the suspension, gas prices are expected to drop 10 cents per litre, while diesel fuel is projected to go down by four cents per litre. Heating oil is the only fuel exempt from the suspension.

"Being an energy superpower means delivering energy Canadians can afford, whether they are paying household bills or filling up their car," added Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.

The fuel tax holiday is estimated to save Canadians $2.4B.
