Sting win final home game, OHL announces disciplinary action for the hockey club

The Sarnia Sting snapped their seven game losing skid in their final home game of the season.

The Sting doubled the visiting Erie Otters 6-3 Wednesday night at Progressive Auto Sales Arena (PASA).

Tyler Challenger scored a pair of goals against his former team in the win and Liam Beamish scored a power play goal for Sarnia.

The game-winning goal was scored by overage forward Ben Pickell, and Sting goalie Patrick Quinlan made 24 saves in net.

Pickell said it was nice to finish their home season on a winning note.

"Obviously, it was pretty special," said Pickell during the post-game news conference. "Not the year we wanted but the fans showed up every night and you can't really ask for much more. Obviously, I wish I spent a couple more years here to get that playoff run, but it was super special."

Sarnia has two more games on the road to wrap up the regular season.

The Sting visit Kitchener Friday night before travelling to Saginaw to take on the Spirit Saturday night.

You can catch all the action live on CHOK (103.9/1070AM).

Meanwhile, the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) announced on Wednesday disciplinary action against both the Sarnia Sting and Saginaw Spirit, resulting from actions during and after their game on Sunday at PASA.

The league said both hockey clubs have been fined $5,000 respectively following the events of Sunday’s third period, that resulted in a cumulative total of 19 misconducts assessed to the two teams.

Sting Head Coach Mathieu Turcotte was fined an additional $5,000 for what the league described as unprofessional and inflammatory remarks to the media following the game.

“With these two teams scheduled to face each other again on Saturday, March 21, the league anticipates a complete return to hockey,” said OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford in a news release. “We expect this weekend’s regular season finale to be very competitive, but rooted firmly in sportsmanship and mutual respect. Both organizations have been made fully aware of the league’s expectations in this area.”
