A former Sarnia Paralympian is getting a brand new lift chair thanks to the generosity of the community.
Robert Hughes put out an appeal for public donations in an article published by Sarnia News Today, last week.
His chair broke beyond repair, and senior government funding wasn't available.
Hughes said his Go Fund Me page generated over $5,500 in 13 days, and is now at over $7,000.
He said he'll be buying his new chair this week and it's expected to arrive in six to eight weeks.
"It means the world to me to have such a supportive community behind me during this challenging time," said Hughes in a post. "The kindness from friends, family, and even people I don’t know has overwhelmed me with gratitude. I am truly blessed and so thankful for your compassion, which restores my hope and dignity each day."
Hughes was born with cerebral palsy and diagnosed with follicular lymphoma in 2020.
He's an 18 time Canadian champion, seven time Pan-Am champion and four time World champion in para track and field.
He represented Canada in the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney, Australia, competing in shot put, javelin, and discus.
