Sarnia homeowner pins down break in suspect

Sarnia police say a homeowner pinned down a suspect accused of breaking into his residence on Monday evening.

Officers were initially called to a home on Cotterbury Street, at around 8 p.m., for a report of someone sitting inside of their vehicle with a hammer.

Police said the suspect took off after being yelled at by the resident, and their vehicle wasn't damaged.

About 20 minutes later, police were called to another home on the same street.

The caller told police that she was sleeping when she heard noises in the home.

She sent a text to her husband asking if he was home, and he said he wasn't.

She yelled out and could hear someone attempting to run away. She got up and saw that her husband had arrived home and pinned the suspect to the ground.

She called 9-1-1 and police came to arrest the suspect.

Police said they found a knife the suspect had taken from the kitchen as well as drug paraphernalia, narcotics, and items stolen from within the residence.

In a news release, police said there were no concerns with the actions taken by the homeowner.

"The homeowner acted lawfully in applying reasonable physical force until police arrived," the police statement said.

At the time of this offence, the accused was subject to multiple release orders and probation conditions.

He was transported to Sarnia police headquarters and held for bail.

While in custody, he allegedly became disruptive, smearing his feces on the walls and throwing it towards the monitoring camera.

Brandon Tetreault faces charges of break and enter, possession of property obtained by crime, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, four counts of failing to comply with probation orders, and mischief under $5,000.

He was remanded into custody after a bail hearing.
