A third floor apartment suffered extensive heat and smoke damage in a fire on Wednesday.
Sarnia Fire Rescue, along with Sarnia police and Lambton EMS, responded to a blaze at a London Road apartment building near Blanche Street just before 8 p.m.
While en route, firefighters were told one of the units was actively on fire. Crews were able to quickly knock down the fire, preventing it from spreading further to other units.
One occupant was taken to hospital for possible smoke inhalation.
Public Education Officer Mike Otis said unattended cooking has been determined as the cause of the fire.
"Sarnia Fire Rescue Services wants to remind everyone to never leave cooking unattended, always “look while you cook”, said Otis in a news release. "Another important reminder that can save your life is to never enter a structure that is on fire for any reason “get out and stay out”.
Otis said firefighters also safely rescued a pet cat from the fire.
A damage estimate was not available.
