The Hub hosts open house, donation BBQ

Sarnia-Lambton Rebound is welcoming residents to The Hub's open house this week to learn about the programs and services offered to youth in the community.

Fund Development Coordinator Beverley Horodyski said The Hub is a safe drop-in space for those between the ages of 12 and 24.

"We have a great staff that supports them," she said. "We work with 35 different community partners so it encompasses all services -- youth-centred -- that they may need."

Horodyski said services range from access to the food bank and laundry machines to employment services, or even just someone to talk to.

"Some of them don't have support at home from their family environment so it's like a family at The Hub," she said.

Horodyski said there's a definite need for the services they provide as 330 youth visited The Hub in May.

During that one month, the organization served 263 meals, there were 28 visits to pick up personal hygiene items, 30 visits to access clothing, and 109 visits to the on-site food bank.

Residents can take a tour of the site and support The Hub during its open house and fill the tub barbecue event on Thursday, July 10, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

"We're inviting the community to come and bring anything from hygiene items -- which is shampoo, soap, deodorant, conditioner. We're even looking for interview clothes because some of the young people have job interviews coming up and they may not have that right outfit to wear," Horodyski said. "We'll have burgers and hot dogs on the grill so if you bring a donation then we'll take care of a tasty lunch for you."

Other donations The Hub could use include non-perishable food items, new bras and underwear, or monetary donations.

Those unable to attend the open house but eager to donate can arrange an alternate drop off by calling 519-491-5579. Horodyski said they tend to post to social media what items are most in need on a monthly basis.

The Hub is located at 350 Indian Rd. S. in Sarnia.
