Hughes Intelligence launches safety patrol

Over the next few months, members of Hughes Intelligence will be cleaning areas of the city known for heavy drug use.

The security guard business in Sarnia launched the Community Safety Patrol Program on July 2.

Vice President James Gandier said they started the program as a way of addressing an issue and giving back to the community.

"We saw a need in the parks and public spaces where there was discarded drug material lying around and we're trying to keep the community safe for kids and families this summer," he said. "It's non-funded, so we're absorbing the cost 100 per cent through the company."

Staff members will be out seven days a week, from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. They have been trained to safely remove abandoned drug paraphernalia from public spaces and will report any criminal or suspicious activity to the Sarnia Police Service.

Gandier said so far, the areas they're monitoring include the Animal Farm at Canatara Park, Canatara Beach, the Blue Water Bridge area, Clearwater Arena, Germain Park, Maxwell Street Park, P.E. McGibbon Public School, Rainbow Park, the riverfront, and Tecumseh Park.

He said so far, the community response to the program has been positive.

"We do have a phone number out and [residents] are more than welcome to call and let us know if they see anything," he said. "The phone number is (519) 312-3291, and it's also open to local businesses."

The program is scheduled to run until September 2.
