City warning of Sarnia Transit scam on social media

City officials say Facebook posts offering special 50th anniversary Sarnia Transit bus passes at a discounted rate are fraudulent.

On the page, 'Public Transport in Sarnia', they're offering unlimited rides for $4 for six months and claim there are only 1,000 passes.

Communications Manager Steve Henschel said the police have been notified, and they're sending out posts to try and warn the public.

Sarnia Transit's 50th anniversary was actually in 2024.

"We're just trying to make the public aware that they should not be interacting with that post, or clicking on any links," said Henschel. "We're not sure ultimately what the end goal of this individual is, but it's certainly a fraudulent post that is in no way related to Sarnia Transit and it's not a product that we're selling."

Henschel said he's aware of at least one person who clicked the fraudulent link.

"It could be, potentially, phishing attacks," he said. "We haven't personally followed the link, I know one individual has reached out to us saying they did interact with it but we didn't follow up with them yet."

Those who clicked the link are encouraged to contact the Sarnia Police Service's non-emergency line at 519-344-8861.
