Canada-US deal on trade and security may be imminent

Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that he expects a deal with the U.S. on trade concerns will be reached within 30 days.

The Toronto Star reported on Monday evening that the Canadian government and the Trump administration have begun working toward an agreement.

"I was glad to welcome President Trump to Canada today for the G7 Leaders’ Summit," said Carney via X. "We focused on global challenges as well as immediate trade pressures, including priorities for building a new economic and security relationship between Canada and the U.S. To that end, we agreed to pursue negotiations toward a deal within the coming thirty days. I’m looking forward to continuing this work at this summit and in the weeks ahead."

There was no immediate statement from the White House, but Trump told reporters ahead of a one-on-one meeting with Carney at Kananaskis, Alberta, that a deal was "achievable", but continued defending the use of tariffs.

"I’m a tariff person. I’ve always been a tariff person," said Trump. "It’s simple, it’s easy, it’s precise and it just goes very quickly, and I think Mark has a more complex idea, but also very good."

Trump left the G7 Summit early on Monday night to return to Washington amid the ongoing crisis between Israel and Iran.

Since becoming prime minister earlier this year, Carney's top priority has been repairing the long-term relationship between Canada and the U.S., and negotiating an end to tariffs that Canadian officials have said would cripple the economy.
