Charges laid after vehicle speeds past stopped school bus

A Listowel man is facing charges after a vehicle failed to stop for a school bus picking up children, nearly hitting two pedestrians.

Perth County OPP said the incident happened in North Perth on October 22 as the bus was stopped with its red overhead lights flashing and stop arm extended. Two pedestrians had just started to cross in front of the bus when a blue minivan proceeded through.

"Another driver made the decision not to stop and passed the school bus putting the pedestrians' lives in danger," police said in a social media post on Thursday. "Thankfully the pedestrians were not struck or harmed and this incident was reported."

Police included video of the incident in the social media post.

As a result of an investigation, a 31-year-old man from Listowel is charged with failing to stop for a school bus with the stop arm extended and failing to stop for a school bus with signal lights activated.

Drivers convicted of failing to stop for a school bus can be fined $400 to $2,000 and receive six demerit points for a first offence.
